Heralding its revival with the planting of a tree, CertainTeed Ceilings has announced plans to reopen a long-shuttered manufacturing plant in Mississippi.

The company has also established a new joint venture and launched a series of new products—all this year.

CertainTeed, based in Valley Forge, PA, will invest $24 million in the Meridian, MS, facility, which closed in August 2009 due to declines in the construction market.

State and local officials in Mississippi joined CertainTeed Ceilings representatives at the plant reopening announcement in June

Now, says CertainTeed, demand for the company's acoustical ceilings products is back. The Meridian plant produces a range of acoustical ceilings for commercial applications.

Growth Seen

CertainTeed expects the plant to resume operations by mid-2014 and bring 110 jobs to the community by 2016.

"Bringing the Meridian plant back on-line is central to strengthening CertainTeed's leadership position in the acoustical product marketplace," said Graham Thayer, vice president and general manager of CertainTeed Ceilings.

"The added production capacity, along with our focus on Environmental Acoustics research, will enable us to grow with the commercial construction market... ."

Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant and Meridian Mayor Cheri Barry joined CertainTeed representatives for a tree planting ceremony to mark the plant announcement.

New Venture, Products

The plant’s reopening is the latest chapter in CertainTeed’s re-emerging ceilings business, the company said.

In January, CertainTeed established a joint venture with Bailey Metal Products Limited of Concord, Ontario—the largest lightweight steel framing manufacturer in Canada.

CertainTeed and Bailey Metal Products Ltd. signed a joint venture agreement in January. Ontario-based Bailey Metal is Canada's largest manufacturer of lightweight steel framing.

The joint venture allows CertainTeed Ceilings to bring "a combination of technical expertise and production capacity to the North American market, providing customers with a single source for high-quality ceiling panels and grid systems," the company said.

Also this year, CertainTeed announced the opening of a research and development facility in Kulpsville, PA. CertainTeed's other ceiling facilities include ceiling panel plants in L’Anse, MI, and Plymouth, WI, as well as a ceiling grid production facility in Ellenton, FL.

CertainTeed Ceilings has also unveiled six new products this year, including high-density fiberglass Ecophon Wall PanelsGyptone BIG Quattro 46 perforated acoustical gypsum panels, and the Rx Symphony line of ceiling panels for healthcare settings.

About CertainTeed

Ecophon Wall Panels are among CertainTeed Ceilings' recently launched products.

CertainTeed says its ceiling panels have one of the highest concentrations of recycled content in the industry; the company also operates a recycling program for used ceiling panels.

CertainTeed is a subsidiary of Saint-Gobain, the world’s largest building products company. With more than 5,700 employees and more than 60 manufacturing facilities across North America, CertainTeed and its affiliates had total sales of about $3.3 billion in 2012.

Updates and employment information on the new plant are available at www.certainteed.com/Meridian.

Said Thayer: "We're excited for the opportunity to become a part of the Meridian community once again and are eager to get back to work as quickly as possible."
