Traditionally, epoxy intumescent materials have been used exclusively for industrial applications. However, since 2003, many high profile commercial building projects have also utilized these high performance intumescent materials. Architects are specifying exposed structural steel sections requiring high mechanical durability, explosion resistance, chemical resistance and low moisture permeability for both interior and exterior applications. Another advantage of epoxy intumescent material is the versatilty of being applied in the shop or field using a variety of spray, trowel or pre-cast methods to achieve multiple levels of surface finish. Epoxy intumescents certainly will not fill the need on every commercial project but should certainly be evaluated and considered along with the thin film acrylic intumescent products.
