Great article!! Very accurate as well. I have inpsected several metal roofs in the Soutwest, New Mexico and West Tx markets and spec'd our elastomerics with great success and performance. Currently working on a few in New Mexico that were spec'd with a moisture cured product that we have swithced to acrylic. I am glad to see D & D "get it right". There is way to much wrong info being put out there by contractors and even some manufacturers that is confusing the architects, roofing contractors and property management/owner entities. As a field rep who spends as much time on roofs as on solid ground, for Elastek Roof Coatings based in Tucson, AZ, I come across many poorly written specs, and confused endusers on what coating system to use. Thanks again D&D for putting the accurate info out there. vmartinez@elastek.com

In a northern climate, would it make sense to use a white roof in the warm months and a black roof in the fall and winter?

Catherine, you are right that black roofs usually make more sense in the north - specifically in the wintertime. Unfortunately, it is currently impractical to change roof color with the seasons. There are some research groups working on this, but there is nothing currently available at a reasonable cost.

Catherin, in the north A light gray color will reflect heat, not as much as white but it will also absorb some heat, not as much as black but it will help melt the snow so a building owner will not have to worry about roof failure from to much of a snow load on there roof.
