Very interesting, though I do wonder where the cost data comes from. I recently had porcelain tile installed in my home for well under $3/sq foot (materials and labor) - admittedly, I did take care of the final grout sealing myself after 72 hours, but that didn't take very long. This is well below the bottom of the cost range given above.

Walter, well written! As a leading distributor of polished concrete equipment,products & supplies in Western Canada we have been @ the fore front of polished concrete R&D for the past 4.5 years.[grocery,big box retail & education] This part of the world uses sand & salt extensively for about 6 months of the year. Unlike warm weather climate's we find polished concrete floors, especially retail, must be auto-scrubbed "daily" during snowy winter months here in Canada. Also, it has been our experience that an application of stain guard is a must to help prevent premature wear in high traffic areas. This is especially true if auto-scrubbing is tasked every other day or weekly in aisles-corridors-check-outs etc. You said it best ... "Each floor is located in a unique setting and a maintenance plan should be established that takes into account how the floor will be used and the level of use anticipated. Nonetheless despite Canada's inclement weather and additional scrub cycles polished concrete continues to be sought after and spec'd by architects for all the reasons you state. As a side note, cement based terrazzo install cost is approx. $25-41.00 psf here.

Various Decorative Polymer coatings have been around for many years. I believe for this article to be fair, a comparison of these systems should be evaluated.
